Flying in New Mexico (and Occasionally Elsewhere)

‘Tho not a passion, flying and aviation has been a pursuit of mine for as long as I can remember.  Since moving to New Mexico in 2010, and getting back in the cockpit in 2012, flying has meant seeing New Mexico from a different vantage point.  This state is so fascinating when traveling on the ground, whether by car or hiking.  Adding the aerial views makes it all so much more interesting and exciting.

In this Journal, I will post reports about flights that I’ve taken, some recently and some in the past, often with Pat, family, or friends.  (This won’t be a typical BLOG, since I won’t post on a regular schedule.)  Posts from recent flights will often correlate with posts in the Hiking in New Mexico Journal when we fly over territory that we have hiked in, or go hiking in territory that we’ve previously flown over.

I will also publish posts about aviation related events that I participate in or attend, such as our EAA chapter’s quarterly Young Eagles, annual Land of Enchantment Flyin, and Double Eagle Aviation Adventure.  And for just the fun of it, visits to aviation museums.

I’m also incorporating into this Journal chapters, pages in this Journal as opposed to posts, that constitute a sort of autobiography about my life associated with aviation.  I envision it as extending a family story that began with an autobiography written by my uncle John Young about his experiences during World War II: “I Flew Them All” (to be published here someday).

Why am I writing this epistle?  First, it serves as a vehicle to bring back memories of times and experiences that I’ve had, to relive them if only for moments (when I write them, and when I return to read them again). Second, as a record about my life that maybe an heir will enjoy, to know something about their ancestor, much as I so value my uncle John’s brief but spectacular of his time flying during WWII.  And third, maybe others will find some parts of my story interesting or entertaining.

I hope you enjoy these stories as much as I enjoyed the  experiences, and the memories.
